Helen Burrell

Helen Burrell was a maid employed by Captain and Mrs Wetherby at the Rectory in Mill Lane, Long Whatton. During a bombing raid in 1940, Helen, who had gone to the front room to check the blackout, was killed by a bomb. Captain and Mrs Wetherby escaped unhurt.
The St. Johns Ambulance team from the village led by Mr. Stanley attended the scene but could not get near for the smoke. It was not until the next morning that the poor girl was discovered. Incendiaries also hit Home Farm.
