Long Whatton National School Photographs

The Date of the Photographs
We do not know for certain when the photographs were taken. However, in the 1901 census, several of the older girls were not at school. For example, Louise Barker was a worker, employed aged 16, as a maker of hosiery wool. On the other hand, Lottie Whiting, one of the younger girls did not start school until the 30th April 1897. So the Photograph must have been taken between these two dates. In 1891, the government introduced free schooling up to 11 years. In 1899, this was raised to 12 years. All of this suggests that the most probable date is the Summer of 1897
